INEC Suspends Sokoto REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Sokoto State, Dr Nura Ali, with immediate effect. The Suspended REC along with the state Administrative Secretary and has been instructed to stay away from the Commission’s office in Sokoto until further notice.

The suspension which was announced in a letter signed by INEC’s Secretary, Rose Orlaran-Anthony read thus: “This is to inform you of the Commission’s decision for you [Dr Nura Ali], Resident Electoral Commissioner, Sokoto State, to stay away from the Commission’s office in Sokoto State immediately until furthermore notice.

“The administrative secretary [Hauwa Aliyu Kangiwa] is directed to take full charge of INEC, Sokoto State office with immediate effects.”

As of the time of reporting, the reason for the suspension is still sketchy, however, it was gathered that the decision may be connected to the recent allegations of irregularities in the just-concluded Presidency and National Assembly elections.
