The National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party, Abdullahi Adamu says consensus may not work this time around as criteria for the selection of the APC presidential flag bearer. The APC National chairman made this known during a radio chat with Voice of America, a radio Hausa Program this morning. The Keffi-born politician emerged as the National Chairman of the APC on 26th March 2022 through a consensus after receiving an endorsement of President Buhari. However, he said in the presidential primary election, the whole game is completely different from that of party politics.
When asked about the speculation that the APC is planning a consensus candidate ahead of the primary election, he said, “There is no truth in what you said. The reason is that the chairmanship seat is not the same as that of the tussle for the Presidency of the country. You can’t even compare the two of them. That question does not arise.
“However the party has laid down its rules and regulations for the aspirants. We would scrutinize all of them based on our guidelines to be sure we pick the right candidate for the party.”
Meanwhile, he noted that the aspirants are very much aware that all of them cannot become presidential candidates at the same time.
But he explained that being an elder of the party, you can’t stop a party stalwart from contesting elections or aspiring for the Presidency. It is their right and we are happy for them. There is nothing wrong with anybody aspiring for the exalted seat of the presidency. It is God that decides who gets what.
He noted that it is God that gives power to man, and any of them that God chooses for the party, so be it, but the party's duty is to ensure justice in conducting the process where one of them can emerge as the candidate of the party.
He also debunked the rumor that some aspirants were jostling for delegates with money describing the rumor as unfounded.
Instead, he disclosed that what he learned is that the delegates were the ones looking for the highest bidder with their concise.
He explained that in the party constitution, there is no rule preventing any aspirant from convincing the delegate to vote for them during the campaign.
Adamu said that “Our delegates should know that anybody sharing money with them can’t be the right candidate for the party. He doesn’t mean well to the country. I don’t have a solution for the problem,”
Meanwhile, for today’s governorship primaries, plans have been concluded between the party and security agencies on how to conduct a hitch-free election.
He cited an example that in Katsina state, the Commissioner of Police, Idris Dabban, on Wednesday, met with Area Commanders and all the Divisional Police Officers in the state.
It was also reported that the commissioner has warned his men to ensure they conduct a rancho-free exercise.
On his part, Kano state commissioner of police, Samaila Dikko has also warned his men that no amount of trouble would be condoned from any individual or group during the exercise.
In a similar manner, the Chairman of the APC in Kwara State, Sunday Fagbemi, urged delegates to conduct themselves in a decent and orderly manner, adding that the party would not tolerate any form of indiscipline from candidates or their followers.
He urged members that for the conduct of the peaceful exercise, all party faithful must adhere to all rules laid down for the conduct of the pool.
