A House of Representative member representing the Ovia constituency in Edo state, Denis Idahosa has called for a scrap of the Nigerian Senate to give the federal government room to cut the cost of governance. The All Progressive Congress, APC member explained that in recent times there has been financial distress being experienced by the federal government, and therefore proposing a unicameral legislature for the country will go a long way in cutting expenses. The lawmaker made the call during an interview with the News Agency for Nigeria, NAN in Abuja yesterday.

He revealed that the red chamber should give way if Nigeria is serious about cutting the cost of governance.

Idahosa insisted that the Senate should be scrapped because they are just increasing the spending of the federal government as most of the legislative duties are being done at the green chamber.

The APC chieftain reminded Nigerians that the country has limited resources that cannot continue to run the way it use to be and therefore require some overhauling.

He also opined that having two arms of the legislature in a developing country like Nigeria is not a smart thing to do.
In his statement, “If we are going to cut our spending, I think one of the houses should be scrapped, which I suggest should be Senate.

“We only sit three times a week. We are being paid salaries to work for Nigerians; we can extend the three days to five days, while we have one house taking care of both jobs.

“So I think to reduce the unnecessary spending that we are actually involved in, the best thing to do is to reduce it to one for more accountability”, he added.
