UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed faced accusations from an advocacy group on Thursday that she granted illegal permits to Chinese firms to import endangered Nigerian timber when she was Nigeria’s environment minister. The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) recently released a report showing how over 1.4 million rosewood logs from Nigeria, worth about $300 million, were exported to China.

The Senate is to investigate the death of 26 young Nigerian girls on the Mediterranean while traveling to Italy.

The measure followed a resolution on a motion “On the death of 26 Young Nigerian Girls en route Italy”, sponsored by Sen. Rose Oko (PDP-Cross-River) during Thursday’s plenary.

Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere has resigned his appointment as the Special Assistant to the President of the Senate on Youth and Student Matters. Ikenga in a letter dated November 3, 32017 to the President of the Senate, Sen. Bukola Saraki stated that his decision was in pursuant of a new political ambition, having being appointed a National Chairman of a Political Party he recently founded.

The Nigerian Senate says further consideration and eventual passage of the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill (PIGB) would be in the first Quarter of 2018, as the federal lawmakers have resolved to prioritize passage of the 2018 budget presented to the National Assembly on Tuesday by the President.

The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to provide a legal framework for mainstreaming of climate change responses and actions into government policy formulations and implementation.

The bill also proposed the establishment of a council to provide for the coordination of climate change governance as well as support the adaptation and mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change in the country.
