Following alleged harassment, intimidation and humiliation by the Police during the last protest march by stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party to INEC over Osun governorship election, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, Senator Ben Bruce and Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye have dragged the Inspector General of Police to court.
The trio had led a protest march to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday to protest against the outcome of the Osun State governorship election.
The Police had attempted to disperse the protesters by firing tear gas before inviting them to the FCT Police Command for an interview over an alleged assault on Police officers and disruption of public peace.
Instead of honouring the invitation, the lawmakers have dragged the Police to court and are demanding a whopping N500m. A court paper sighted by Dailypost indicated that the lawmakers are requesting the court to direct the defenders to “jointly and severally pay the applicants the sum of N500m only, same being the pecuniary and exemplary damages arising from the humiliation, intimidation, harassment and unlawful attempt to arrest the applicants by the agents of the second respondent (Commissioner of Police).”
The case was filed by Mahmud Abubakar Magaji, SAN on behalf of the lawmakers.
