President Muhammadu Buhari has called on all stakeholders in Gabon to respect the constitution and eschew actions that could throw the oil-rich country into chaos. The President made his position known on Tuesday in a statement issued to newsmen by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
He warned Military officers in Gobon to understand that the era of military incursion into politics in Africa was long gone.
His statement read in part
“The military officers in Gabon should understand that the era of military coups and governments in Africa and indeed worldwide, is long gone.
“Democracy is supreme and the constitutional stipulations on the peaceful change of administration must be respected. That is the only way we can ensure peace and stability not only within the country but also in the region.”
President Muhammadu Buhari who also doubles as ECOWAS Chairman advised military officers with political ambition to resign their appointment. He also enjoined the good people of Gabon to remain on the side of law and order.
Gabon's government survived a short-lived coup attempt on Monday, arresting a small group of soldiers who had seized the oil-rich African nation's state radio station while its president Ali Bongo recovers from a stroke in Morocco.
