The United State has claimed it is disappointed by the low voter turnout and reports of voter intimidation, vote-buying, allege interference by security forces and violence in some locations during the 2019 general election.
However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its reaction to the US assessment of the poll revealed there could never be perfect election anywhere in the world.
But, the US has urge all stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, credible, transparent and peaceful election process especially as another round of the supplementary poll is around the Conner in some states.
The US Embassy on Thursday while making statement in Abuja commended Nigerians’ commitment to the democratic process, promised that it would continue to monitor closely the ongoing polls.
The US envoy said, “As long-time friends of Nigeria, we continue to monitor closely the ongoing elections. We do not have a preferred party or candidate.
“As cited by many observer groups in their preliminary reports, we were equally disappointed by the low voter turnout as well as credible reports of voter intimidation, vote-buying, interference by security forces, and violence in some areas.
“We are disappointed by those acts of violence and extend our sympathy to the families of those slain ones, including some Adhoc workers of the electoral empire and the security services personnel.”
The US revealed that it had no preferred candidate; their mission is a support for a democratic process “where the will of the Nigerian electorates is reflected in the results.”
However, Rotimi Oyekanm, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC chairman, while reacting says they appreciated the US support for the nation’s electoral process. But, said that no country in the world could conduct a perfect election, adding that the US observations were not enough to discredit the integrity of the Nigerian elections.
