The Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle stated on Thursday that his opposition to the new Naira policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cost him his re-election bid at the March 18 governorship election in the state. According to him, some people within the Federal Government actively worked against him in the just concluded elections.

Speaking during an interview with DW Hausa, Matawalle said, “What’s being said is that we went to the court over new Naira notes redesign. They said myself, Ganduje, and El-Rufai would be punished accordingly.”

He further claimed that a lot of military personnel were sent to polling units to intimidate voters to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Matawalle said, “3 days to the gubernatorial election, they sent over 300 vehicles conveying soldiers into Zamfara. Such a high number of soldiers! If they could send them to us to fight insecurity, it would be better. But they only sent them during elections.”

According to him, video evidence obtained indicates that voters were harassed and beaten for wanting to vote for him.

Matawalle of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 311,976 votes while his opponent Dauda Lawal-Dare of the PDP polled 377,726 votes.
