Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that the planned concession of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, has been approved by the Federal Executive Council. The Vice President revealed this on Monday at the State house, during his remarks at the 5th edition of the Presidential Quarterly Business Forum which he chaired.
His remarks at the meeting were tweeted by the official handle of the State House.
Details were however not provided on which FEC meeting approved the concession as the meeting has not held in the previous fortnight.
The FG had earmarked four of the country’s international airports for concession, including the Mallam Aminu Kano and Port Harcourt international airports, but have been met with resistance by aviation workers.
In September 2016, the National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, asked the government to halt plans to concession the airports which they described as the cash-cow of the 22 federal government-owned airports.
But the government has insisted the exercise was not privatization or outright sale as facilities and equipment involved in the concession would remain the property of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
