The National Rescue Movement, NRM, a political party has dragged the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi before the Federal High Court seeking his disqualification for possessing dual citizenship of two countries. According to the NRM party, Peter Obi is no longer fit to occupy the number one seat of power in a country where his allegiance is in doubt owing to holding dual citizenship. The plaintiff is therefore in a suit filed before the court among other things praying for the court to order a disqualification of the LP candidate in the forthcoming General Election going by the 1999 constitution as amended he claimed.
In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1842/2022, the Labour Party candidate was accused of acquiring citizenship of Dallas in Texas, United States of America in breach of sections 1 and 137 of the 1999 constitution as of Nigeria’s as amended.
Lead counsel to NRM, Mohammed Danjuma is seeking a perpetual order of the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC from recognising Peter obi as the presidential candidate of the Labour party in the forthcoming general election.
Contain in a 14-paragraph affidavit backing the suit from the NRM counsel, Peter Obi was said to have voluntarily acquired Dallas Citizenship and a certificate of same was presented to him by the mayor of Dallas, Mr Eric Johnson.
A video and a picture of a recorded event of the certificate presentation to Peter Obi were tendered by Danjuma to support his claim.
When the suit came up today for the first hearing, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo lambasted the plaintiff for failing to serve the plaintiff with the originating sermon.
The judge thereafter fixed February 10th for mention of the suit and advised the plaintiff in their own interest to serve the defendant a copy before the said date.
Defendants in the suits are; INEC, Peter Obi and Labour Party as first, second and third defendants respectively.
