President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinibu yesterday said that he is well acquainted with the task of leading a country as he prepares to take over the leadership of Nigerian come May 29, 2023. Tinibu made such remarks yesterday after he was conferred with the highest honour of the land, Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, GCFR, and his vice with Grand Commander of the Order of Niger, GCON, by his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinibu was declared winner of the presidential poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the 25th of February 2023 when he polled the highest vote defeating his opposition, Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, who came second and Peter obi, of the Labour Party, LP, who came third place.

While accepting the batten of leadership presented to him by the president, Tinibu said to Buhari, “I understand the honour given to me today and the magnitude of the task ahead; whether you go to Daura or Niger Republic, expect knocks on your doors,”.

He added: “I am a simple man who is the beneficiary of the support and goodwill of the people of Nigeria.

“The people have put their trust in us. You have done your part, Mr. President. He told Buhari.

“Now, that great duty descends on me. I understand the meaning of the honour given to me today and of the task that waits, he said.

“I must run this race and must do it well. On security, the economy, agriculture, jobs, education, health and power and in all other sectors we must make headway. The people deserve no less. In this, I shall disappoint neither them nor you, Mr President.”

Though, he acknowledged that the road may not be smooth, but expressed optimism that with collective ability, he will overcome the challenge.

In his statement, “Our way shall not always be smooth. Yet we are imbued with faith in our purpose and a firm belief in our collective ability to overcome the challenges that confront us.”.

He applauded President Buhari for his relentless effort through ensuring that Nigeria does not fall apart, saying he took the courageous path while others shy away.

He commended Buhari, especially for making June 12 a Democracy Day in the country not minding his critics, as well as conferring the Moshood Abiola with a posthumous GCFR a decision others could not take.

Tinubu said: “President Buhari, you have shown courage in taking tough decisions others avoided.

“One such decision was to recognise the injustice of the annulment of the 1993 election, to designate June 12 as Democracy Day, and to bestow the nation’s highest honour on the late MKO Abiola.

He reiterated that the ceremony exemplified Nigeria’s vibrant and true democracy, where one leader honours his successor and ensures a smooth transition of power.

“This stately occasion is living evidence that Nigeria is a vibrant and true democracy,” Tinubu concluded.
