The only Nigerian Football Club never to be relegated in the Nigerian Premier League, Enugu Rangers, has hit the ground running with a 2 - 0 victory over Salitas football club of Burkina Faso in the opening Group B match of the Caf Confederations Cup.
The match which took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday was officiated by Gambian referee Papa Bakary Gassama who is widely respected as one of Africa’s best arbiters. Goals from Godwin Aguda and Isaac Loute helped the team see of the first encounter of the tournament. Rangers who won Nigeria’s Cup competition the AITEO Cup last year have been in a great form in the Confederation Cup, winning five and drawing just one of their six games so far with their midfielder Godwin Aguda currently the competition’s joint top scorer with five goals.
The group’s other game; a Tunisian derby between Etoile du Sahel and CS Sfaxien will hold later on Sunday evening (5pm local time) at the Olympic Stadium in Sousse.
Gbenga Ogunbote’s wards will test their might against the highest ranked team in the competition Etoile du Sahel as well as CS Sfaxien, both from Tunisia in Group B with Burkina Faso side Salitas FC completing the group.
They will then travel to Tunisian side CS Sfaxien who have in their ranks, former Nigeria youth international Kingsley Sokari ten days in the city of Sfax. Rangers will then face group favorites Etoile du Sahel in a doubleheader fixture on February 24 and March 3 in Sousse and Enugu respectively.
