Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Enyimba FC have been ordered to play their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie behind closed doors over stadium concerns, club officials said Tuesday.
The second leg of the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League Preliminary Round fixture will be played on Sunday, inside an empty Aba international stadium.
Enyimba are looking to come back from a 1-0 deficit, where they lost away to Burkina Faso’s Rahimo on Sunday at their home arena in Aba, southeast Nigeria.
Enyimba needs to beat their opponents by two unreplied goals to advance to the next round of the competition.
This is as a result of a sanction by CAF who imposed the empty stadium punishment on the two-time African champions following what it labelled ‘crowd invasion in the previous home game’
But African football’s governing body said the stadium, which re-opened last year after major renovations, still lack adequate floodlights, CCTV cameras and an electronic scoreboard.
CAF is due to launch another inspection of the stadium following the match.
Enyimba, two-time winners of the Champions League, said they are confident they can fix the problem should the squad reach the group stages.
