The Super Eagles duo were key as Leicester City won their first Community Shield title in 24 years. The only time the FA cup title holders came close was in the 2015/16 season when they fell to a 2 - 1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United.
Three Nigerians participated in the game, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Edozie and goal scorer Kelechi Iheanacho. Ndidi played the full 90mins, Edozie 65 mins while Iheanacho came off the bench on the 79th mins to seal the victory 10 mins later from the spot, making him the first player to score a penalty in a Community Shield final (excluding shoot-outs) since 2001.
The 24-year-old was brought down by Nathan Ake towards the end of the encounter and he stepped up himself to score the crucial goal at the 89th min to gave the Foxes a 1-0 victory and to also ended Iheanacho's goal drought against his former club after nine appearances against them in all competitions.
Leicester will now go into the season with full confidence after making a bright start to the 2021-22 campaign and will hope to build on this win when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers for their opening league fixture on August 14.
