Legendary Premier League referee Mike Dean is set to quit at the end of the 2021/22 season, although he may still be around the game as a full-time video assistant referee (VAR). The veteran was supposed to retire at the end of last season but made a u-turn after the pandemic forced many games to be played behind closed doors.

The 53-year-old has refereed in the top flight for 22 seasons, with over 550 fixtures officiated by him and has issued over 114 red cards.

Sources indicate that the current long-standing Premier League referee is currently in talks with the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL), to potentially continue as one of just two full-time VAR officials, while also eyeing Mike Riley's position as the head of the referees’ association.
