International football body, FIFA has fined Nigeria N63.9 million as a result of vandalism that occurred at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on March 29, 2022. The Super Eagles failed to secure a spot for the 2022 World Cup, hundreds of disappointed fans invaded the pitch and destroyed sections of the stadium after Nigeria played a 1-1 draw against Ghana during the World Cup qualifiers.

FIFA said the vandalism breached Article 16 of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and the fine was a result of failure to implement “existing safety rules and failure to ensure the law and order are maintained in the stadium, invasion of the field of play and throwing of objects”.

FIFA further stated that Nigeria will play their next international match behind closed doors.

According to reports, FIFA fined or warned 49 countries for misconduct during the qualifiers.
