Former world number one Serena Williams will open her summer hardcourt season at the WTA tournament in San Jose, California, July 30-August 5. “I am looking forward to opening my summer season at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic and competing in the new venue,” Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, said in a statement posted on the tournament website.

Serena Williams has withdrawn from this month's Italian Open, five days after opting out of the WTA event in Madrid. The decision puts in doubt her participation at the French Open, which begins on 27 May. Williams is a four-time winner of the Rome event, which takes place from 14-20 May.
