A Parisian court has on Wednesday found the former head of World Athletics, Lamine Diack guilty of corruption, and sentenced to four years in prison with two years suspended and a fine of nearly $600,000 in a Russian doping scandal. Diack, 87 led the IAAF for 16 years and was found guilty to have received bribes of over $3 million to cover up Russian athletes' doping and also using the money to help finance Macky Sall's presidential candidacy campaign in 2012.
Also, Diack's son, Papa Massata Diack who worked as a Marketing consultant when his father was found guilty for corruption and sentenced to five years in Jail as well as ordered to pay 5 million Euros in damages. However, Senegal has refused to extradite him.
Some Senegalese supporters of Diack have alleged racism in his verdict, saying the sentence was unjust.
“I think if the law is valid in France, it will be overturned because it’s really unfair,” Abdoulaye Diagne, Coordinator of the support committee for Lamine Diack.
