Google has bought part of HTC's mobile phone division for $1.1bn (£820m), a return to hardware ownership for the company. The deal will see 2,000 HTC staff join the US internet giant and underlines Google's broadening ambitions in smartphone production. Google develops the Android operating system used in more than 80pc of the world's smartphones but largely relies on manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei and HTC itself to make and sell its phones, unlike Apple, which controls the design and development of both software and hardware.

Scientists have developed a camera that can see through the human body. The device has been designed to help doctors track medical tools, known as endoscopes, during internal examinations. Until now, medics have had to rely on expensive scans, such as X-rays, to trace their progress. The new camera works by detecting light sources inside the body, such as the illuminated tip of the endoscope's long flexible tube.

Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday it aims to launch a foldable smartphone next year under its Galaxy Note series brand, next year. Koh Dong-jin, president of mobile business at Samsung Electronics, said the company is setting its eyes on 2018 to release a smartphone with a bendable display. But he said there are several hurdles it has to overcome, leaving room to push back the release if those problems are not solved.

WhatsApp is gearing up to offer a free app to small-to-medium sized businesses, though it hasn’t outlined the specific functionality of the app. The enterprise solution will allow global companies “to provide customers with useful notifications like flight times, delivery confirmations, and other updates.”
