FG Orders NCC To Block 9.2 Million Sim Cards

The Minister of Communication, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami has revealed that he has ordered the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) to ensure all network providers/operators to block all sim cards that are not registered until users comply with the law of “all sim cards must be registered” because of the security threat is poses on Nigeria.

The directive was in fulfillment of his earlier directive to all Agencies and Parastatals under the Ministry which he issued when he first assumes duty in the ministry. The meeting which gives rise to submission of NCC’s baseline short-term performance targets report to the minister.

 

According to the minister, the security risk associated with the irregularities in the registration of the said sim cards is too enormous to be ignored and therefore the ministry will not tolerate any excuse from the network operators in carrying out the mandate.

 

A report which contained all precise records of registered sim cards in Nigeria has already been signed by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta.

 

The report revealed that, there are about nine million, two hundred thousand (9.2 million) sim cards that have failed to comply with the registration regulation in Nigeria.

 

Uwa Suleiman, the spokesperson to the ministry disclosed that investigation carried out by the order of the minister has for the first time in the history unveiled the magnitude of the detail.

 

The statement partly reads; ‘‘In line with the directives of the Minister of Communications Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami FNCS FBCS MCPN on assumption of office to all Agencies and Parastatals under his purview, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) has submitted its baseline short-term performance targets report.
