In a bid to curb the spread of fake news, twitter is set to introduce a mock red and orange warning labels "harmfully misleading", highlighting fake or misleading information shared by public figures and politicians, NBC News reports. As seen in the leaked demo video sent to NBC News, the tool will enable verified fact-checkers and journalist highlight misinformation directly under the original tweet or post, with a participation button for the option of feedback.

The labels read: " Twitter community reports have identified this tweet as violating the community policy on harmfully misleading information.

“This tweet’s visibility will be reduced.”

Twitter confirmed the feature, however, says it has not decided if it will roll out the new tool to its users, as it is still in the early stages.

Speaking on the new feature, a spokeswoman for the tech company said, "We’re exploring a number of ways to address misinformation and provide more context for tweets on Twitter.”

"This is a design mock-up for one option that would involve community feedback.

"Misinformation is a critical issue and we will be testing many different ways to address it," She added.

Twitter is working towards reducing the spread of fake news on its platform as the US campaigns are ongoing ahead of this year's presidential election.
