Apple Inc and Google have announced that they will collaborate to create a contact tracing technology in a bid to reduce the spread of the deadly Coronavirus by allowing users logging their phones to other phones that they have had come in contact with.

The technology by the two operating system giants aims to identify potentially infected people and get them into testing or quarantine faster than the current system countries are adopting.

According to health experts, once created, the technology will aid managing the virus once countries end their lockdown.

However, there are concerns by privacy advocates saying a centralized system of contact tracing will allow European and Asian Governments, who have for long pushed for centralized system gain access to who people interact with.

Michael Veale, University College London legal lecturer involved in European contact tracing system DP3T said, "With Apple and Google, you get all the public health functions you need with a decentralized and privacy-friendly app."

Jennifer Granick, surveillance and cybersecurity counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, said "To their credit, Apple and Google have announced an approach that appears to mitigate the worst privacy and centralization risks."
