Borno State Sets Up Virtual Courtroom Proceedings – First Of Its Kind

The Borno state government has set up a virtual courtroom for hearing cases using teleconference, digital box.

 

The Borno state Chief Judge of the High Court, Kashim Zannah, While granting an interview to the NTA said though the initiative was driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, the state will cash on the opportunity even after the global pandemic.

In his statement, Zannah revealed, “Our aim has never been just because of COVID-19.

Even under normal circumstances, there is no need to delay cases because someone needs to appear in court to open his mouth to talk.

That he can do from anywhere in the world,” he said.

“Now that COVID-19 has brought that reality, we are hopeful that these changes will now come fast and we will show you more than we can do.

We can end up making it a rule even.

Deploying the technology, Fadawa Umaru, a Judge in a state High court, delivered judgement in a case between the state and Ali Mohammed.

The defendant was discharged and acquitted having proven not guilty as charged in a culpable murder case.

In a similar manner, the Chief Judge of Lagos state, Kazeem Ologba have also followed suit to approve the virtual hearing of cases via Skype or Zoom.

He revealed the guidelines would be released ahead of May, 4th when it would take effect.

As part of measures to arrest the spread of the dreaded coronavirus, the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Tanko Mohammed had ordered the suspension of all court proceedings except on urgent cases.

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation had also on 21st April said Lawyers would be interfacing with the court digitally.
