Software giant, Microsoft has announced that it will be bringing Android apps to the Windows 11 Operating System through the Amazon Appstore. Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Microsoft confirmed the development during the Windows 11 event, saying the move could improve the number of apps on the Microsoft platform, adding that the Android apps will run natively on Windows 11 OS and will be downloadable from Amazon’s Appstore.

“Starting later this year, people will be able to discover Android apps in the Microsoft Store and download them through the Amazon Appstore,” Panay said.

The company said it in a bid to make the Android apps support on the new Windows 11 possible, it will be using the underlying engine of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), it is also partnering with Intel Bridge Technology to run the Android apps.

Microsoft noted that existing Windows users can upgrade to the new Windows for free once it's available, however, the new Windows does not have Google Play Service Support, meaning apps like Gmail, Play Store, or any Google Play Service integration may not work.

The release date for the new Windows is yet to be announced but the company said it would be made available later this year.
