The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a security advisory to Nigerians over a new malware called “Schoolyard Bully” which has infected over 300,000 Android devices worldwide and steals Facebook account credentials. The latest advisory was released by the NCC’s Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) which stated that Nigerians with mobile devices should only download applications from application stores and official sites.

It further advised mobile users to double-check each application and uncheck boxes that ask for extra third-party downloads when downloading or installing applications, adding that users’ devices should be routinely scanned with anti-malware applications to discover cyber security threats.

The advisory reads, “The (Zimperium) research stated that the malware employs JavaScript injection to steal the Facebook login information. The malware loads a legitimate URL (web address) inside a WebView (a WebView maps website elements that enables user interaction through Android View objects and their extensions) with malicious JavaScript injected to obtain the user’s contact information (phone number, email address and password), then send it to the command-and-control server.

“Furthermore, the malware uses native libraries to evade detection and analysis by security software and machine learning technologies”.

Google Play Store has removed applications containing the malware, however, it has spread via other third-party Android applications.
