Facebook's WhatsApp in recent times has been used globally as a platform for political campaigns and sharing of fake news. This was witnessed in Brazil's elections in October 2018.
Presently, WhatsApp plays a major role in fuelling fake news ahead of India's forthcoming elections as well as Nigeria's Presidential election set for 23rd February and Governorship and NASS will take place on March 9.
Nigerians use social media platforms to promote business and other professional networks. Political parties have adopted this means, particularly WhatsApp for online campaign and propaganda against each other; despite the threat, fake news poses.
WhatsApp amplifies the speed in which rumors are spread, this further increases challenges such as Ethno-religious issues, Separatist groups, among others.
In January, WhatsApp in an attempt to curb the spread of fake news limited message forwarding to five individuals or groups.
Relatedly, on Friday Twitter suspended the accounts of some Nigerian influencers like Bhadmus Hakeem (@Bhadoosky), Ani Nomso (@ani_nomso), jokunle (@jokunle) for violating its election integrity guidelines.
