The Brazilian Ministry of Justice has on Monday disclosed that it fined United States’ Social Media Technology Company, Facebook Inc 6.6 million reais ($1.6 million) for improperly sharing user data, Reuters reports.
According to the ministry’s Department of Consumer Protection, it discovered that the tech giant had improperly made available the data of 443,000 facebook users to an App called “thisisyourdigitallife.”
The ministry launched its investigation after the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018.
However, Facebook has replied to the Brazilian government, saying it is evaluating the proper legal actions regarding the accusations and fine.
“We are focused on protecting people’s privacy,” Facebook said.
Also, the tech company said it has made enhanced its privacy policy, restricting “the information which App developers can access.”
The ministry said the world’s largest social network failed to provide users with adequate information regarding default privacy settings, particularly related to data of “friends” and “friends of friends.”
Meanwhile, Facebook has 10 days to appeal the fine, which is to be paid within 30 days.
