The United Kingdom government has imposed an immediate security ban on the social media app TikTok over security concerns. The country has now joined the US, Canada, Belgium and the European Commission to ban the Chinese-owned video app, especially on government devices.

According to cabinet office minister, Oliver Dowden, he noted that experts had conducted a risk assessment of third-party apps in relation to sensitive government data. He continued by stating that as part of security measures, government devices will only be allowed to access apps on a pre-approved list.

"The security of sensitive government information must come first, so today we are banning this app on government devices. The use of other data-extracting apps will be kept under review. Restricting the use of TikTok on Government devices is a prudent and proportionate step following advice from our cyber security experts.” - Dowen Stated.

However, A TikTok spokesperson has said that the company will try to work something out with the government because it believes that the ban roots from a "fundamental misconception" and is "driven by wider geopolitics, in which TikTok and UK users play no part".
