Google Fires 28 Employees Over Protest

On Wednesday, Google terminated 28 employees who had participated in a protest against the contract with the Israeli government that Google shares with its rival, Amazon. The firings happened after nine employees were arrested on Tuesday during sit-in protests at Google offices in Sunnyvale, California, and New York City. The detained workers were released after a few hours, according to employees.

Binance to Halt Naira Services Amid Crypto Exchange Crackdown

Binance will halt all transactions and trading in Nigeria's local currency after March 8 amid a country-wide crackdown on crypto exchanges that have been blamed by authorities for feeding a black market for foreign exchange. It will stop supporting withdrawals after Friday and any remaining balances in Nigerian Naira will be automatically converted into Tether - a stablecoin whose value is pegged to the U.S. dollar. Binance a cryptocurrency exchange platform, was accused of exploiting the Naira which led to its crash. More so, the company is also accused of terrorism financing, money laundering, and tax evasion, among other things.

EU Begins Investigation Into TikTok's Possible Online Content Breaches

The European Union has launched a formal investigation into possible online content breaches by TikTok, including content rules safeguarding children. The EU's executive arm, the European Commission, said it had opened official proceedings against the Chinese-owned short video platform over a potential breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). EU industry chief Thierry Breton in an X post on Monday said he took the decision after analysing the short video app's risk assessment report and its replies to requests for information. He said protection of children was a "top enforcement priority" for the DSA. “As a platform that reaches millions of children and teenagers, TikTok must fully comply with the DSA and has a particular role to play in the protection of minors online,” Breton said. “We are launching this formal infringement proceeding today to ensure that proportionate action is taken to protect the physical and emotional well-being of young Europeans. We must spare no effort to protect our children.”
