The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) not to allow individuals register more than three Mobile Numbers, adding that the move was aimed at checkmating the surge of kidnapping and banditry in the country. The directive was issued from the office of the Minister for communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by his Technical Assistant on Information Technology, Femi Adeluyi, the Minister directed the NCC to revisit the policy on SIM card registration and usage by blocking all loopholes in the current policy.

He revealed the action was premised on the need to react to varying feedbacks observed by security agencies. He called for urgent revalidation of SIM cards that were not properly registered in September 2019 and urged the Commission to block numbers that had not been registered.

According to the new directive, henceforth, the National Identity Number which is obtained through the National ID cards registration must form the basis for the SIM card registration, while for foreigners, their passport Number and Visa number shall form the basis.

The directive further reiterated that NCC must ensure that only fully accredited agents are deployed to support the SIM card registration process.
