American online video sharing platform, YouTube has on Thursday announced a global $100 million 'Black Voices Funds' where Nigerian artists and creators can apply for grants. This was made known in a statement by Alex Okosi, Managing Director, Emerging Markets YouTube EMEA, saying the global fund would run for the next three years, supporting Black YouTubers. He said the fund was established to enable and encourage artists and creators to thrive on YouTube.
According to Okosi, the $100 million funds which was initially announced in June and named the #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund would invest in fresh content including intellectual power, authenticity, education on racial injustice, among others.
The managing director also noted that the fund’s focus this year would be on creators in the US, Brazil and Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa.
He said, "Our goal is to expand funding to more countries over the course of the next 3 years.
"Additionally, we hope to provide a consistent drumbeat of educational training, workshops, and community events to Black creators and artists globally.
"The #YouTubeBlack Voices Fund is part of the work currently underway to ensure that YouTube is a place where Black artists, creators and users can share their stories and be protected”.
Meanwhile, applications for the fund can be done on YouTube’s official website.
Okosi explained that YouTube’s new endeavors include ramping up enforcement and also closing down accounts that constantly post hateful comments in a bid to curb the spread of fake news and hate speeches.
YouTube was launched in May 2005 and is the most popular online video community that allows billions of people from all over the world to discover, watch, and share videos.
