The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and owner of Twitter, Elon Musk has announced that the social media platform would be introducing different colored verification badges to distinguish between different types of accounts on the platform. Musk tweeted this announcement on Friday from his official Twitter handle.

He tweeted, “Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week. Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates”.

In a different tweet, he said verified individual accounts would display “a secondary tiny logo showing they belong to an organization if verified as such by that organization”.

Prior to his takeover of the company, a verification badge was free, only blue colored, and strictly reserved for world leaders, celebrities, organizations, etc.

Following his purchase of Twitter, Musk introduced a monthly subscription fee of $8 for a verification badge to any person willing to pay.

The move was aimed at diversifying the platform’s income stream but the plan generated several negative effects resulting in Musk delaying its launch date.
