Just as it promised it would three years ago, Rolls Royce is set to reveal its all new high sided SUV, which it revealed will be called "cullinan" coined, named after the largest diamond ever discovered.
The hatchback off-road vehicle has been called "project cullinan" since its development was first announced. But a recent release was the first confirmation that the car's name had apparently been hiding in plain sight.
"It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product," said Torsten Muller-Otvos, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls Royce.
"Just like the Cullinan Diamond, the largest flawless diamond ever found, it emerges when it is perfect and exists above all others."
The vehicle's namesake Cullivan Diamond was extracted from a mine deep in South Africa's Magaliesberg Mountains in 1905. Weighing in at 3,106 carats, it was cleave into nine stones, then cut and polished, with the two largest portions of the Cullinan going into the British Imperial Crown and Sovereign's Sceptre with cross.
From the hot dry deserts to the Arctic Circle and grassy glens to the towering canyons, this new vehicle designed with the "engineering architecture" of the full sized Phantom sedan has been shaped and tested in the field to perform as would a popular SUV.
"We were inspired by the epic processes, over many millennia, which went into the creation of the Cullinan Diamond. The name embodies the many facets of our new motor car's promise..." says Muller-Otvos. "Quite simply, the name Cullinan is perfect and brilliant."
The Cullinan will be the second Rolls Royce built on its all-new aluminum architecture. The new aluminum architecture will underpin every future Rolls Royce, a notable change that means it will be used on Rolls Royce vehicles of varying size and weight as well as with different propulsion, traction and control systems
Preliminary photos display a camouflaged Cullinan, but Rolls Royce is projected to debut the vehicle in its full glory sometime this year.
