Niger Coup: President Tinubu Meets Governors Of Border States

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday met with the governors of states sharing border with Niger Republic, as part of consultations by President Tinubu regarding the coup situation in the West African nation, which resulted in the removal of the Nigerien President, Mohamed Bazoum by the military junta. In attendance for the meeting held at the State House, Abuja were Governors Umar Namadi (Jigawa State), Dikko Radda (Katsina State), Idris Nasir (Kebbi State), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto State) and Mai Malam Buni (Yobe State).

Niger Coup: We Are Yet To Receive Order For Military Operation In Niger – DHQ

Following the military action threat by the ECOWAS against the military junta in Niger, the top echelon of the Nigerian military says it has not receive any order to commence military operation in Niger Republic. This followed the rumour that the military has commenced assembling its equipment and troops for the Niger operation. The Economic Community of West African states, ECOWAS had during their meeting in Abuja on Sunday issued a one week ultimatum to the military junta leader in Niger Republic to restore ousted president Bazoum back to power of face military action.

Niger Closes Airspace Due To Threat of Intervention

Niger’s military rulers announced Sunday that they had closed the country’s airspace, warning that any attempt to violate it would meet with an “energetic and immediate response.” The statement reads in part “Faced with the threat of intervention, which is becoming clearer through the preparation of neighboring countries, Niger’s airspace is closed from this day on Sunday… for all aircraft until further notice,” the country’s new rulers. The announcement came as the deadline from the West African bloc ECOWAS for them to hand back power to the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum was due to expire.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday dispatched a delegation to the Republic of Niger with a mandate to resolve the current political impasse occasioned by the recent coup in the country. Tinubu, the Chairman of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS), charged the delegation to ensure a robust dialogue to end the impasse.
