CSOs Decries Possible Socio-Economic Outcome Of AES Withdrawal From ECOWAS

Civil Society Organizations, CSOs, and media institutions are worried by the unfavorable political, economic, and security implications of the three West African countries. The decision of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has sparked fresh concerns among stakeholders in the West Africa region. Among the CSOs disturbed by the twist in ECOWAS’ affairs were the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, CISLAC; West African Civil Society Forum, WACSOF; the Transition Monitoring Group, TMG; and ThisDay newspapers. Others include the West Africa Network for Peace building, WANEP-Nigeria, Nigeria Network of NGOs, NNNGOs, and Human and Environmental Development Agenda, HEDA. They expressed fears at a forum titled: ‘CSOs and Media Interactive Meeting on the State of ECOWAS and Regional Integration in West Africa’ held in Lagos state.

Namibia's President Hage Geingob has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek. According to his office, the country's independence struggle veteran died on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital after a prolonged fight with cancer. While receiving the shocking news, world leaders including Nigeria’s President have extended their condolences. Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba who is now in acting capacity according to the country's constitution disclosed in a statement that "The Namibian nation has lost a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of our constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republics Dumps ECOWAS Membership

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republics has expressed their decision of severing every ties with Economic Community of West Africa, ECOWAS, and therefore no longer a members. The three West African countries jointly made their decision to dump the regional government known this afternoon. Their statement during the pronouncement reads, “After 49 years, the valiant people of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger regretfully and with great disappointment observe that the ECOWAS organization has drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of the pan-Africans”

ECOWAS: Nigeria Renews Suspension Of Flights To Neighbouring Niger Republic

Following the unresolved sanctions that Nigeria slammed on Niger Republic after the military junta overthrow the government of Mohammed Bazoum, the Federal government of Nigeria has renewed the suspension of commercial flights from Niger Republic to Nigeria and vas visa. This resolution was in response to ECOWAS decision to the events of military Junta in Niger Republic on July 26, 2023, where military junta led by General Abdourrahamane Tchiani, ousted President Bazoum on seat as the sitting president.

Illegal Mining Rubbing Nigeria 90% of The Sector’s Required Revenue – ECOWAS Envoy

The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Dr Mohamed Sidie Tunis, has disclosed that Nigeria loses 91 per cent of its supposed revenue from the mining sector to illegal miners. Tunis was making this statement during an opening of a three-day seminar organised by the Parliament on “Illegal mining and its implications in the ECOWAS Region.” According to the speaker, a staggering 80% of mining in the country’s northwest region is being conducted illegally by criminals, draining the nation 91% of its potential mining revenue.
