Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, and their dog were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities conducted autopsies on Hackman and Arakawa but found no signs of external trauma. The cause of death remains unknown, and investigators are awaiting toxicology results. Carbon monoxide poisoning is being considered, but no gas leaks were detected.
A maintenance worker discovered the bodies and made a frantic 911 call, pleading for police to arrive quickly. When officers arrived, they found the front door open. Arakawa’s body was in a bathroom, showing signs of decomposition, with an open prescription bottle nearby. Hackman’s body also showed similar signs of decomposition. A deceased dog was found near her, while two other dogs were alive on the property.
Hackman’s daughter Leslie said her father was in good health despite his age, practicing yoga and Pilates regularly. She was shocked by his wife’s passing, as she was much younger. The family is waiting for official answers from investigators.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office is treating the deaths as suspicious and continues to search for answers. Investigators have not ruled out homicide, suicide, accidental death, or natural causes.
Hackman, known for his roles in The French Connection, Unforgiven, and Superman, retired from acting in the early 2000s. His family released a statement mourning his passing, remembering him as a beloved father and grandfather.
Director Francis Ford Coppola paid tribute, calling Hackman a “great actor” and celebrating his legacy.
