The Nigeria Union of Teachers has faulted the Federal Government’s decision to exempt candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education from writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UMTE, warning that the move could weaken standards in the teaching profession even further. Speaking at the 21st Century Teacher initiative in Abuja during a presentation on digital transformation in education, NUT President Audu Titus Amba said teaching should not be reduced to a fallback option for students who fail to gain admission into other disciplines.

The Federal Government has, with effect today, banned recipients of honorary degrees from prefixing “Dr” to their names in official, academic, or professional usage. According to the FG, the use of the title by recipients constitutes a misrepresentation of academic credentials, which will henceforth be treated as academic fraud, with attendant legal and reputational consequences if found guilty.
