The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), via the Federal Ministry of Education, has stated that the presidential approval to establish the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State, was granted prior to the seven-year moratorium imposed by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on new federal tertiary institutions.

Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been named the substantive Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja by the Governing Council of the institution. The appointment was announced following the Council’s 80th meeting, held on Friday, November 7, 2025.

The Federal Government has begun disbursing funding through the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund, or TISSF, which is intended to improve staff welfare, institutional productivity, and innovation throughout Nigeria's tertiary education system. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, made this announcement in Abuja on Friday.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s tertiary education sector through targeted fiscal interventions, policy reforms, and continued dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions.
