The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reported a significant decline in candidate performance in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, compared to the previous year. Out of 1,969,313 candidates from 23,554 schools who took the exam, only 754,545, representing 38.32%, achieved a minimum of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics. This reflects a sharp 33.8% drop from the 72.12% recorded in 2024.

The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has launched a loan scheme to support staff of tertiary institutions. The scheme known as the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF) is created to improve the welfare and professional development of academic and non-academic staff in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The federal government has now formally set 16 years as the minimum age requirement for entry into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This policy was announced during the ongoing Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa stressed that any admissions processed outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) will be considered illegal, warning that those involved will face legal consequences.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named new members to the governing councils of the University of Abuja, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU). According to a statement released on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the appointments come in the wake of the February dissolution of the University of Abuja’s Governing Council and the removal of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi, over questions concerning her eligibility.
