Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been named the substantive Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja by the Governing Council of the institution. The appointment was announced following the Council’s 80th meeting, held on Friday, November 7, 2025.

The Federal Government has begun disbursing funding through the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund, or TISSF, which is intended to improve staff welfare, institutional productivity, and innovation throughout Nigeria's tertiary education system. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, made this announcement in Abuja on Friday.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s tertiary education sector through targeted fiscal interventions, policy reforms, and continued dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions.

The House of Representatives has decided to look into the standard and quality of finished and continuing projects carried out by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in tertiary institutions across the country to ensure value for money. Following a motion sponsored by Aderemi Oseni (APC, Oyo), the House requested that the Federal Ministries of Education and Finance, the National Universities Commission, TETFund, and development partners devise plans to refurbish first-generation universities, aiming to restore the universities' glory and quality.
