The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has confirmed that discussions surrounding Nigeria’s proposed nuclear power programme are ongoing, with technical engagements continuing between the agency and Nigerian authorities. Speaking in Vienna, Austria, during an IAEA programme and responding to an enquiry from PREMIUM TIMES, Grossi said the agency has maintained steady collaboration with Nigeria through technical consultations, site visits, and meetings aimed at advancing the country’s nuclear energy ambitions.

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, expressed regret to Nigerians over the country's ongoing power problems and assured them that measures are underway to restore a steady electricity supply. Adelabu expressed regret that the disruption has adversely affected companies, schools, and industries nationwide, especially during the current dry season, which is characterized by extreme heat. At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, he expressed regret.

The federal government has ordered licensed meter installers and electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to deliver and install electricity meters for customers at no cost. It has also warned that any business that is seen requesting payment for the devices or installation will be prosecuted. The instruction was released by Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, as part of initiatives to speed up universal metering, do away with estimated billing, and rebuild confidence in the nation's electrical supply infrastructure.

The federal government has prohibited electricity distribution firms (DisCos) and their installers from collecting any kind of payment for the installation of meters, threatening to prosecute officials who are found to be extorting customers. He stated that the meters must be placed for customers at no cost and were purchased through the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), which is supported by the World Bank.

Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) is now a holding company after realigning its corporate structure. It said that this action will assist effective service delivery throughout its franchise territories, increase operational agility, and strengthen governance. The business said in a statement on Sunday that the reorganisation was in line with the Electricity Act of 2023, which gives state governments the authority to create separate electricity markets and regulatory commissions.
