The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has stated it would expand the country’s satellite capacity with the acquisition and deployment of NigComSat 2A and 2B with the view of strengthening broadband, connectivity and critical communications services.
This was made known in a statement by the Acting Head, Corporate Affairs Division of the Nigeria Communications Satellite, Stephen Kwande, on behalf of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton–Idehen.
The statement reads, “This is a significant milestone for NIGCOMSAT and for Nigeria, and we commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the leadership and support that have enabled us to reach this stage.
“NIGCOMSAT – 2A and NIGCOMSAT – 2B will strengthen our national satellite capacity, expand connectivity and support critical communications across the country.
“Our priority is to translate this investment into measurable value for Nigerians and position NIGCOMSAT for stronger impact within the global satellite and digital economy.”
The acquisition of the 2 new satellites is expected to support access to digital services across several sectors, such as education, healthcare, financial services, agriculture, and is also projected to improve secure communications for national security and defence while also reducing the country’s excess reliance on foreign satellite infrastructure.
