In honor of this year's Eid ul Mawlid, which honors the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, the Federal Government has proclaimed August 25, 2026, a public holiday. In a statement released on Friday by the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government and congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and throughout the diaspora on the service honoring the life of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility, and service to others. “These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them," he said.
The minister emphasized that upholding unity remained a shared responsibility and urged Nigerians to embrace the occasion to pray for peace and national cohesiveness. He wished the Muslim community a happy and peaceful Eid and asked residents to observe the holiday with moderation and respect for one another.
Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the current administration's dedication to preserving national peace and safeguarding people's lives and property.
