The United Nations (UN) has announced its plans to relocate the headquarters of 3 agencies from New York to Nairobi, Kenya, commencing from 2026. The 3 agencies to be relocated are the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UN Women, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
According to the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, this development is designed to “save costs, bring the UN closer to the people it serves, and shift more power to the Global South under the ‘UN@80’ reform.”
Nairobi now joins New York, Geneva, and Vienna as the only four cities in the world to host multiple UN headquarters.
About 800+ staff and their families are expected to move to Nairobi, which will boost the local economy and also give Africa a greater voice globally.
