President Bola Tinubu has approved the subsidy for the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals in Nigeria. A single dialysis session costs around N50,000 but with the newly approved subsidy, the new subsidized cost will be N12,000; a 76% cost reduction.
This development was disclosed on Monday in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala.
The statement disclosed that the subsidized price is already in effect in 10 Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) and teaching hospitals across the 6 geopolitical zones listed as follows: Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos; FMC, Jabi, Abuja; University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State; FMC, Owerri, Imo State and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri, Borno State.
Other designated hospitals are FMC, Abeokuta, Ogun State; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos; FMC, Azare, Bauchi State; University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin, Edo State and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar, Cross Rivers State.
The statement added that “more federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.”
Bwala noted that “last year, President Tinubu also approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, a bold step aimed at boosting maternal healthcare and reducing preventable maternal deaths.”
He stated that these measures are part of the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda designed to ensure that Nigerians are not denied healthcare because of cost.
