Indian officials have said they would keep purchasing cheap oil from Russia despite threats of penalties issued by the United States President, Donald Trump. Recall that Trump had stated that a new set of tariffs would be imposed on India if it did not stop its imports of Russian crude oil.

However, 2 senior Indian officials stated that there has been no change in policy because the Indian government had not given any direction to oil companies to reduce imports from Russia.

Since the war with Ukraine began, India has significantly increased its purchase of Russian oil; India imports more than one-third of its oil from Russia.

Note that, 2 other major importers of Russian oil, China and Turkey, have not faced similar penalties from Trump.
