The resident medical doctors at the Ondo State University Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure, have commenced a warning strike following alleged non-payment of their salaries by the state government. The doctors began the strike on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020, and threatened to embark on an indefinite strike on Nov. 9, 2020, if the government failed to respond to their demands. According to the medical workers, the state government allegedly owes them four months’ salaries. The distressed doctors decried a situation where other health workers under the health management board are receiving their salaries regularly except them who are allegedly left out.
The doctors, who staged a mini-protest at the office of the Chief Medical Director of the teaching hospital.
The spokesman of the protesting doctors, Dr. Taiwo Olagbe, appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders to prevail on the state government to settle their unpaid salaries.
Olagbe further alleged that the other health workers under the state health management board receive their salaries regularly.
Efforts to reach state government officials to react to the allegations of the doctors proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.
