According to Dr Bessie Eziechila, a Consultant Paediatrician working with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja disclosed that two years is the normal duration for breastfeeding. This according to her, is for the advantage of both the child and the breast-feeding mother.

Eziechila informed newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, 27th August 2019 that, two years is the complete, adequate and ideal period for breastfeeding a child.

In her expert opinion, working-class mothers should explore necessary avenues of breastfeeding their children for their wellbeing.

She advised working-class mothers to try to express breast milk and store for a varying number of hours, depending on the mode of storage.

She also described breastfeeding as a non-negotiable aspect of childcare.

Adding that, it is a roadmap to a healthy society.

It can be recalled that the World Health Organisation (WHO), recommended the practice of up to two years and beyond for breastfeeding.

Some of the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding as was observed by the paediatricians include; helps in family planning by slowing the return of ovulation, having healthier and more intelligent children than those deprived the two years exclusive breastfeeding practice.
