The Labour Party (LP) announced the composition of a 29-member national caretaker committee on Wednesday, to be chaired by a former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman. She was nominated during the LP stakeholders meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Abia Government House which was convened by the Governor of Abia state, Alex Otti and had in attendance Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, his running mate, among others.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the immediate-past Senate Minority Deputy Leader, was also appointed to serve as Secretary to the committee.
The Terms of Reference of the Committee include conduct of Ward, Local Government, State Congresses and National Convention as soon as possible and in accordance with the Constitution of the party.
In his remarks, Otti said the meeting was convened to address the problems facing the party and also chart a way forward, adding that the tenure of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had elapsed since 10th of June 2024.
The factional chairmen of the party, Julius Abure and Callistus Okafor declared the committee as illegal.
