70,000 international student graduates from Nigeria and other countries face the risk of deportation due to recent changes in federal immigration policies of Canada which led to protests. Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau recently announced limitations for study permits and reduce permanent residency nominations.
He also announced plans to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers in low-wage positions.
Protests have erupted nationwide, with international students organizing rallies in various provinces, including Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
Canada also abolished the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) programme in 2021 which allowed international students to acquire valuable work experience in the country upon the completion of their studies.
Last year the Canadian government also introduced a two-year cap on international student visas which is projected reduce the intake of foreign students by 35 per cent, which the government argues is vital to alleviate pressures on unemployment, housing and public services.
